My third cousin and BEST friend, David Arnold Smith of Grafton, W.Va., passed away of a massive heart attack on 26 August 2011. His passing leaves a void in my life.
David was a passionate member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans who was currently serving as Lieutenant of the West Virginia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He worked tirelessly to ensure that Confederate Veterans (and others) had a proper headstone. His work was recently featured by a Clarksburg area television station. David was also a tireless re-enactor who annually participated in events at Laurel Hill, Gettysburg, Rich Mountain, and Cedar Creek.
He was my mentor in helping me to learn the process of properly marking veterans'
graves.
David was born in Pontiac, Mich., 31 May 1953, the son of Oley and Marjorie Morris Smith.
He was an employee of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection working on mine site reclamation.
Funeral services were Wednesday, 31 Aug 2011, at Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton, W.Va., with the Rev. Sue Lowther officiating. Interment was at the Woodsdale Memorial Park Cemetery, Grafton, W.Va.
- Virgie Belle Suttle Bennett, 93, of Bradley, W.Va., formerly of Skelton, died 16 Aug 2011, at the home of her daughter Helen Farley. Mrs Bennett was the last surviving member of her birth family.
